We discuss his mentors, his creative process to capture magical moments on camera, his work behind the scenes on the show “High Potential”, his advice for those trying to make it, and so much more!
So refreshing to read about the joy of doing work you love and the art of collaboration. The added bonus: actual shooting and production in LA. More of this, please.
What an insight this was! High Potential is now on my to watch list. & I really like the closing question on advice for people trying to get into entertainment & his answers; which, are pretty universal for most other fields.
Uhm, on a different tangent, how do you source the interviews? I have a friend who's an Emmy award-winning director & producer, I wonder if connecting you would be of interest to you? She's not quite as established/as commercial as the normal profiles you interview, I think. But yeah, just a thought! (:
Glad to hear you enjoyed the interview! I’d be curious to hear your thoughts if you get a chance to watch High Potential. I always enjoy hearing everyone’s advice because as you mentioned, most of it is universally applicable!
It would be great to talk to your friend about their work and creative process. Feel free to send me a message/chat here on Substack and we can coordinate further!
Another terrific interview, sharp, generous, and full of real craft. I loved Mathew’s phrase “preparation meets flexibility” and the way this piece lets the cinematography feel technical as well as deeply emotional. You always bring out the human story within the process, which is one of your great gifts, along with being such a crackerjack writer. Does anyone even say crackerjack anymore? Well, I’m officially bringing it back, heh heh.
Thank you very much for the kind words, I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the interview! I’m going to start a petition to get people to start using the term “crackerjack” more. In fact, I may even find a way to put it into my next post! I also loved the “preparation meets flexibility” phrase as well
Yeah I find being flexible artistically is so much easier said than done. Appreciate the kind words! Happy to hear you enjoyed the interview. Keep up your great work as well!

Enjoyed this interview! 💗 I love learning about all that goes into the filmmaking process. I also appreciated the advice on persistence, being kind, and collaborative. A reminder that applies in so many areas of life.
Happy to hear that enjoyed this interview! It’s amazing how much goes into every project and how every role plays its part. I loved that advice from him as well. People like yourself embody the mantra of kindness, persistence and having collaborative mindsets extremely well which is so great to see. It really is universally applicable

I liked that line too!

Yeah I 100% agree with your comments! It's not nearly as common to see shooting and production in LA as it used to be despite all the talent there.

Ha! I fully support this noble crackerjack revival effort.
The repetition of the word “flexibility” in his responses is a jarring reminder of one of my artistic weaknesses.
Fantastic interview as always, you have a real knack for opening up your subject!
